ABOUT THE PROJECT
Lucid Dreams of Sweet Water is an interactive projection mapped tale told on the walls and liquid centre of a circular room, and acts as a vessel for dreaming through deep time.
The audience is invited into a circular room with a topographic map of Cape Town, and Table Mountain at the center. Here they meet the digital narrator, a slave who washes clothing during the early 1800s who is trying to figure out a problem that she won’t give up on. She decides to slow down, open her imagination and begin contemplating how water is the source of life. This story is displayed onto the walls of the room, with data representations of Cape Town’s life forms projected onto the central piece.
Drawing on the history of Cape Town, South Africa, the narrators recounts the cosmic memory of the mountain in the centre of Cape Town, the sleeping giant, who dreams of our waking life. From asteroid impacts that brought water to Earth, through contemporary concrete canals, to glimpses of what may yet occur, she slows down time in this African town, reminding us that our lives are lucid manifestations of nature’s dreamscape.

The Iziko Museums of South Africa, Cape Town, South Africa, is one of the largest heritage institutions in the country. Iziko’s archives span natural history, art, and culture.
The selected archive, Amanzi eAfrika, is a forthcoming exhibition and archive on water as a vital ecological, cultural, and spiritual resource, using oral traditions, indigenous knowledge, and scientific insight.

XR specialist and immersive media artist with over 15 years across 3D animation, modelling, AR/VR development, and creative production. His practice explores African narratives through immersive technology, bridging heritage and innovation.

Reilly Cloete is a final-year Film Production student at CPUT with hands-on experience in videography, editing, and social impact storytelling. Award-winning producer passionate about blending narrative craft with emerging immersive technologies.
