ABOUT THE PROJECT
To All Who Live In It is a 360° immersive video installation that examines how national historical narratives are constructed, framed and contested through moving image archives.
The project is developed from a series of 35mm reels produced in 1960s Apartheid-era South Africa that document scenes of labour, leisure and everyday-life under state-sanctioned segregation. The experience is structured around a filmed theatrical production, featuring a variety of analogue artforms including collage, handmade scenography and live-scoring.
This project offers a rare opportunity to reanimate apartheid-era film fragments while critically examining the politics of representation. It foregrounds Black urban life, labour, domestic spaces and bureaucratic violence while exposing the apparatus that framed these realities. By merging craft with advanced capture technologies, the project creates a tactile immersive world that transforms how audiences encounter these historical images. In doing so, it proposes that looking deeply into the past is not nostalgia, but instead a method for generating new paradigms for understanding the present.

ABOUT THE ARCHIVE
The National Film, Video & Sound Archives, NFVSA in Pretoria, South Africa, is the custodian of South Africa’s audiovisual heritage, and preserves the nation’s moving image memory.
The project’s selected archive, the Moolman Opnames Collection, is a set of 1960s films documenting everyday life under apartheid. The collection provides both an intimate look at domestic life and a disturbing record of state surveillance and propaganda.

He explores these phenomena through a variety of visual forms including collage, creative research and mixed media.
